Migrating from Cognos Enterprise Planning

If you’re an organisation currently using Cognos Enterprise Planning, you’ll be aware of the current trend of moving the planning process over to Cognos TM1.

Such a migration needs to be considered carefully, as this is not a “lift and shift” exercise.

When planning a migration, it’s important to consider a few things along the way.

Normally, a technology shift should offer you the opportunity of validating your current budgeting and forecasting processes, assumptions and guidelines. Are these still valid ? We’ve found organisations employing practises which are followed “because we’ve always done them that way”.

The switch over also allows organisations to look at the data and decide whether it’s still relevant or needed. Have you been collecting certain data, because you always have, or because it is fundamental to the future value of the budget or the organisation ? Are there now newer influences on the budget which take priority in shaping the future that should be included in the future migration.

Contributing to the process has also changed. If planning revenue numbers, can this be contributed to by the sales teams directly ? Can they do it on the move, by the salesperson in the field ? Are you catching customer, geographic and volume data with the revenue number ?

Moving to TM1 harnesses the power of using larger and faster cubes and using the 64bit OLAP engine, reducing the D-links between silos of EP cubes/tables. Inter-cube rules allow for real-time updates of budgets and forecasts, and web technology allows for plan contribution in the field.

Oraios can help your organisation in migrating from Enterprise Planning to TM1. We’ve helped organisations to carefully migrate successfully. We’ll be able to assist in issues in hardware infrastructure, licensing, technology offerings, data migration and data model design and functionality.
